5 Outfits That'll Get You in the Back-to-School Spirit

The universe has a sick sense of humor for creating a space in which 8 AM classes can exist. But alas, they do, and they especially save themselves for those poor, unfortunate souls who are forced to register dead last.

If you, O weary college student, are one of those souls, well, you might want to ask for an IV of the blackest black coffee and finally take your mom’s well-meaning but kind of an eye-roller advice to lay your clothes out the night before.

That said, choosing the perfect outfit for your first day of classes—no matter if you’re in college or high school (Godspeed, you 7 AM-ers)—can be such a struggle and leave you feeling like Lizzie McGuire.

To ease the self-inflicted (but universally felt) pain of first day fashion indecisiveness, we have put together comfy yet stylish outfits for on-campus, all-day wear.

An added bonus: these go-to pieces can complement favorites from your very own closet, "absolutely nothing" mindset be damned. Just snatch that go-to pair of blue jeans or plain white tee for basics to build upon!

May your coffee be strong, your classes easy, and your outfit a standout(fit).

This Trina Turk classic shirtdress will transition you easily from summer-hot days into the cooler, crisper Autumn season. Plus, these Yosi Samra foldable ballet flats have a cushioned footbed and a breathable elastic top line that will make the trek between classes way more bearable.

Wrap on this lightweight scarf for a pop of bold, bright color. Don't forget to put a spare pen or two to jot down notes (in the rare case the teacher/professor decides to skip syllabus day) inside of this steal of a designer purse (under $70, what?!) by Donald J Pliner.

The powder blue color of this linen button down by J Brand is the perfect feminine touch underneath this Indiana Jones-inspired, cargo pocket jacket by Sanctuary. Layering is key when bustling in and out of class to accommodate both the freezing cold A/C of school buildings and our fickle friend, Weather (Texans, y'all know).

These Henry & Belle white skinnies—a complement to neutrals such as soft beiges and blues—have X-fit lycra to stretch to your legs' desire for 24-hour wear! Slip your feet into these safari-styled espadrille flats to add a bit of pattern to your basics.

This Heather by Bordeaux tank dress is almost too easy to throw on for those (decidedly dreaded) early morning wake-up calls. The deep wine color fits aesthetically into the fall color palette. Once the temperature begins to drop, keep your shoulders warm in this drapey jacket by Gentle Fawn.

Make your day-to-day the runway with these trendy platform sandals by Bernardo, and top off the look with this long dangly necklace for an extra something-something.

This Hunter Bell midi skirt is made of an all-climate fabric: 100% silk, which will keep you comfortably cool for the last days of summer and warm and cozy for the first days of fall. Pair with this Heather by Bordeaux tank (for only $28) for a classic, delicate look.

Don't forget to accessorize with a touch of bling, like these studded espadrilles by Sergio Zelcer and black-and-gold bangles.

A white tee and jeans are, hands down, a never-fail combo. It never, ever fails. Never fails to be comfortable, trendy, and versatile! You can always dress it up or dress it down.

The 3/4 length sleeve of this white linen tee by Vince is appropriate for busy days of popping in and out of A/C'ed classrooms. Throw on your go-to pair of jeans or try these Fidelity Denim relaxed-fit skinnies (in several sizes, at 60% off) and roll the cuffs to complement the sleeve length!

This chic, triangular scarf in a burgundy red is simply the best pop of color and a simple enough accessory for this minimalist look. Plus, these Sam Edelman leather ballet flats are such a closet staple!
